Dowton Abbey & The Cotswolds

Day 1

After we have boarded the coach we will begin our journey south, making comfort stops on route., before stopping at Calke Abbey. Set in the Derbyshire countryside, Calke was actually never an Abbey but a Baroque Mansion built between 1701 – 1704. The once grand building had fallen into a state of disrepair until the Trust took over, now they have started to bring the mansion back to its former glory including all its contents from an eccentric family who never threw anything away. We will leave here late afternoon to make our way to Walton Hall Hotel, you will have full access to the leisure facilities throughout your stay.

Day 2

We will depart the hotel at 9.30am this morning to make our way to Highclere House, the home of the Earl & Countess of Carnarvon. However, now it is more famously known for its role in the hot ITV series Downton Abbey. You will be able to walk in the footsteps of Hugh Bonneville and Maggie Smith as you spend the day here exploring the Castle and Gardens.

Day 3

Today we will have a leisurely breakfast before making our short journey to Stratford Upon Avon the birthplace of William Shakespeare, where you can spend the day at your leisure.

Day 4

Today we will make our way through the Cotswolds, stopping a Burton-On-The-Water, often described as ‘little Venice’, it is one of the most picturesque villages in Britain. Take a stroll along the river, or why not visit the model village or the Cotswold Motoring & Toy Museum?

Just after lunch we will make our way to Cheltenham where we will catch a steam train to Broadway. Sit back and take in the sights of some of the most idyllic countryside of the UK, whilst reliving yesteryear through the sound and smells of the Steam Train.

Day 5

Our break must come to an end, but not before visiting Temple Newsham on route home. Set in the outskirts of Leeds, it is a Tudor-Jacobean House with grounds landscaped by Capability Brown. Wander through the house listening to the stories of those that have lived there throughout the years, take a stroll in the gardens, or refuel in the stable block courtyard restaurant. We will stay here until late afternoon before making our way home.
