Kelpies & The Falkirk Wheel

Day 1

We will travel north stopping at Houghton Hall Garden Centre for a comfort stop on route to Drumlanrig Castle, where a royal welcome awaits you.  The finely hewn red sandstone that gives the ‘Pink Palace’ its affectionate name, adds to the beauty of what is regarded as one of the finest examples of 17th Century Renaissance architecture in Scotland. We will embark on a guided tour of the grand reception rooms, magnificent staircases, ornate period features and cosy parlours giving you an intimate taste of life through the centuries; viewing stunning paintings, tapestries and objects d’art from the internationally acclaimed Buccleuch Art Collection. Late afternoon we will board the coach again to make our way to the Westerwood Hotel, set at the foot of the Campsie Hills. You will have access to the leisure facilities, so please bring your swimwear if you wish.

Day 2

Today we will take a short journey to the Falkirk Wheel, the world’s only rotating boat lift. Traditionally the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals were connected by a staircase of 11 locks which took a day to transit, until 2002, after 8 years of planning the Falkirk Wheel was opened. We will have time to explore the fascinating engineering of the wheel, before embarking on a ride around the lift. After lunch we will then go on to see the Kelpies, the world’s largest equine sculptures. Standing at over 30m tall, weigh 300 tonnes, and were built in just 90 days.

Day 3

After a leisurely breakfast we will depart the hotel for Edinburgh, arriving mid-morning. Enjoy Edinburgh at your leisure, shop until you drop on the famous Princess Street, or why not soak in some Scottish culture by visiting one of the many museum’s Edinburgh has to offer, The Real Mary King’s Close, a labyrinth of underground streets, is highly-recommended. Mid-afternoon we will board the coach to make our way home, you will be advised of the drop off order once we begin our journey.
